Those of you who have followed our journey in the past year will know that we have an insatiable attraction to hidden gems that are quirky, off the beaten path, pay great attention to detail and hopefully, provide access to good food. So imagine our delight when we realised that there is a place in Singapore that happens to encapsulate all these awesome elements in a funky refurbished 1920s shophouse – the Wanderlust Hotel! ROOMS
Staying in Wanderlust Hotel is an experience in itself because no two rooms are identical – definitely not an easy feat considering how there are 29 rooms in this four-storey boutique hotel! The folks at the Wanderlust Hotel came up with an awesome idea to offer award-winning designer companies flexible creative control over each floor, and this gave birth to three refreshing themes that come with their own distinct flavour. All rooms come with standard amenities, an all-inclusive minibar, a Nespresso machine, and a Handy Phone, which comes with unlimited 3G, allows you to make unlimited local & international calls and comes with a whole host of social media apps that are pre-downloaded into the phone!
We begin with the second floor of the hotel, which is all about Eccentricity, and the awesome designers from phunk studio are clearly colour-crazed because each room is splashed entirely in one Pantone shade. Every room comes with a neon song titles inspired by the colour and the edgy ceilings break the monotony of convention.
Stepping out of the elevator on the next floor, you are greeted by the teasing question “Is it just black and white?” Here you are presented with a drastically different experience,as the colours give way to monochromatic tones, and black corridors are juxtaposed with rooms that are almost totally white, save for the adjustable playful mood lighting in the most surprising of places. Inspired by paper, the stencilled art installations in the Pop Art rooms will leave you feeling like you are part of a painting whilst the bold lines in the Origami rooms reverberate with the avant-garde experimentalism of its designers.
The top floor is a whimsical wonderland titled “Creature Comforts” that will change your perception of hotel rooms. In fact, the difference is immediately felt upon your arrival on the top floor, where you’ll find the celling height markedly higher than the ones below. Each room is a loft-unit inspired by one of five themes – Bling, Tree, Space, ASCII and Typewriter – and they epitomise the concept of wanderlust by instantly transporting you to a brand new destination. Each loft comes with a bathtub, two televisions, and lots of room for imagination.
Tip: While making your booking, there isn’t an option to choose the room you like. However, you can email the hotel with your preference after making the booking and they could give you the room depending on availability! Remember to provide them with your booking number!
FACILITIES
We couldn’t possibly introduce you to a place without ensuring that it will makes your stomach happy, and Cocotte does just that. Serving traditional and unpretentious French cuisine in a cozy, casual setting, it is famous for its fantastic weekend brunch buffet that allows you unlimited selection from its trolleys filled with hot savoury French food and homemade sweets. On the weekdays, lunch and dinner options are also available and the food portions are perfect for communal sharing.
Wanderlust Hotel also has a psychedelic outdoor jacuzzi nestled in the garden of the second floor. Enjoy great views of the neighbourhood here!
NEIGHBOURHOOD
A lot of Wanderlust Hotel’s old world charm and inspiration comes from its location in the bustling ethnic enclave of Little India, and it was so chosen by Loh so that his guests will take the opportunity to discover the many hidden gems of this neighbourhood. With incredible restaurants and bazaars right at the doorstep of the hotel, the possibilities for exploration are endless! What’s more, it is the perfect launch pad for hipster enclaves like Tyrwhitt Road and Haji Lane and just a stone’s throw away from Orchard Road. But by then i should be too old since i will take ages to build up my wealth, so my health condition would be unsuitable to travel to space. Also, this hotel room has something special that the usual hotel dun have which make my staycation really special..i want to win the staycation because last year when my bf brought me for a staycation at port dickson. He booked a very high end hotel with a beautiful scenaric view and our hotel room has window panels on the floor to view the sea beneath. On that night, we had our candle light dinner by our mini pool in our room. After dinner, while i was out for bath, he lid up the pool with candles of ” I LOVE YOU “. To me, i felt that it was really touching at that point because it gave a different atmosphere to the room. 😉 this was perhaps the best memorable valentine that i had and its something that i will never forget. For upcoming yearly anniversary, I believe my bf and i deserve a good break for our upcoming anniversary, with just the two of us. A romantic night with some good wine and food will definitely give a different ambience to the overall date and i am still in the progess of planning. Hope to make this anniversary a really special one for him, to break the norm and relax yourself fully and may it be a day to remember for 2015. To me, Love cannot expressed just by a single word. It’s a native that has to be explored by each of us so that we can truly understand the true meaning of LOVE ! Hopefully wanderlust hotel can provide us with that ambience and mood and make this anniversary staycation a successful and memorable one for him since last year my bf gave me a memorable valentine and I would want to give him a surprise this year ! The Tree Loft definitely strikes to me when it comes to inspiring my Wanderlust. My desire to travel around the world, and seeing new things will always be growing, just like a tree. Happy anniversary, thanks to both of you for sharing your exciting adventures and travel inspiration! My girlfriend and I would love to have a respite from the concrete jungle in the woods, plus a dose of comfort. I enjoy being close to the nature in the woods, and to be able to enjoy it with her (who isn’t exactly a fan of the traditional idea of staying in the woods) would be ideal.
